Listen up! Vice News just released a short documentary (22 minutes in length) about the very real challenge dairy farmers are facing in securing a legal, reliable and skilled workforce.

As Vice explains, “Milking cows is a dirty, monotonous job, and as we found out in our latest episode of Immigrant America, it’s not a job many unemployed Americans are willing to do. But for some reason the government doesn’t give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas.”

I wanted to share this documentary that was filmed in Western New York to shed some light on this very serious and very real issue that tormenting our dairy industry.

Cows need to be milked two or three times a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. Currently, the only visas available are for temporary or seasonal workers, such as those working in orchards and vegetable fields. We have a population that is very interested in the work. They risk their lives and leave their families to work here. The are good, hard working people who do not want amnesty, rather they just want to work here for a couple years in order to provide a better way of life for their families back in their home countries.

If you drink milk or want to see our dairy farms continue, please watch this video and consider helping all of us by supporting immigration reform in Congress. It is imperative for our dairy industry to survive.
