Local Farmers Serve as Advocates and Dairy Cow Birthing Center Hosts

It’s not exactly an exhibit that comes together overnight or even within a few weeks but the Dairy Cow Birthing Center at the New York State Fair is one that is truly a labor of love that takes nearly an entire year to plan. When the State Fair opens on Wednesday, August 21, New York dairy farms will be well represented as the host farms to provide “uddermiracles” to the visitors of the 7th annual Dairy Cow Birthing Center. This exhibit provides the opportunity to witness the true miracle of life, ask questions about agriculture and personally meet a farmer.

Host farms not only provide their cows for the exhibit, but also their time and it’s a process that the cows have been preparing for through their 9 months of pregnancy. The 36 “mothers-to-be” are gearing up for their travel to Syracuse where the birth of a calf signifies the beginning of not only a new life, but the beginning of milk production. New York is proud to be the third leading producer of milk in the nation with nearly 4,000 family farms and over 600,000 cows.

Be sure to head to the west end of the fairgrounds and check out the Dairy Cow Birthing Center. We’re number 41 on the fair maps and are located on the corner of Belle Isle and Broadway, just past the circus so be sure to come down and meet the farm owners and employees from the following farms:

  • Aug. 21-23, 2019 – Ivy Lakes Dairy, Stanley, NY
  • Aug. 24-25, 2019 – H. Woods Farm, Clayton, NY
  • Aug. 26-27, 2019 – North Harbor Dairy, Sackets Harbor, NY
  • Aug. 28-29, 2019 – Sheland Farms, Adams, NY
  • Aug. 30-31, 2019 – Murcrest Farms, Copenhagen, NY
  • Sept. 1-2, 2019 – Milk Street Dairy, Watertown, NY

Each farm will provide six expecting mothers and will share their passion for dairy farming and personal stories as they visit with all of you. These family farms are great examples of the dedication and commitment that it takes to farm in New York State. The farm owners, employees and numerous industry leaders will be available every day at the exhibit to answer your questions, share experiences on and off the farm, and help everyone better understand modern animal agriculture.
