Dairy farmers will go to nearly any extreme to make their cows more comfortable. Water beds and sprinklers are common on farms these days. Thick, cushioned mats for them to walk and lay on are another. Farmers are even installing robots so cows can be milked on the cow’s schedule, rather than when convenient for the farmer. All of this to make is done to make our dairy cows more comfortable. In industry terms, we call this “cow comfort.”
Well, we didn’t want the cows that visit the Dairy Cow Birthing Center at the New York State Fair to miss out on any of the luxuries of home, so the exhibit this year will feature a brand new, state-of-the art, mechanical back scratcher for the mamas in waiting. Thanks to the very generous donation of Future Cow, our State Fair beauties will be relaxing and backscratching with Future Cow’s fabulous Comfort Brush. Per their website, the Comfort Brush has proven effective at “improving cows’ overall health and significantly increasing milk production”. As a result, cows are cleaner, happier and more productive. (Maybe I should get one for my office!)
I’ve seen these types of mechanical brushes in action on dairy farms in New York and the cows just go ga-ga (or moo-moo) over them. I’ve seen cows line up waiting for their turn to use the brush and will even get impatient waiting their turn and will nudge the cow in front as to say, “Hurry along, Bessie!” Our poor cows on our farm have the old stationary kind that doesn’t move unless they move it. But they still pay a visit to it regularly to get a good scratch behind the ears or waddle up against it to loosen up any dead hair.
Here’s a video clip of Future Cow’s Comfort Brush in action. To see it for yourself in person, be sure to come out the Dairy Cow Birthing Center at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, August 21-September 1, 2014. You can check out how we pamper our cows, and you may even be able to witness a birth! If you’re a farmer and know the fine folks at Future Cow, please extend our gratitude to them for their support and ask about their innovative products.
